People diagnosed with a chronic illness often face at least some disruption to their normal lifestyle. Fatigue and pain often accompany treatment for managing a chronic illness. For some, their long-term illness affects the way they look, their physical capabilities and/or their independence. It is often a harbinger of tough financial times, as many sufferers of long-term illness may eventually reach the point where they can no longer work.
All of these new found issues and problems are a source for people diagnosed with a chronic illness to become depressed. You may feel that your mind has gotten aboard an emotional roller coaster. One day you feel acceptance of your diagnosis and the next anger, guilt or shame. Hopefully, learning that these feelings are common and normal may help you.
Changes in Lifestyle
In order to cope with your chronic illness, you may have to make some lifestyle changes. For instance, if you recently were diagnosed with asthma, you might need an inhaler in your pocket or purse and you’ll have to make an effort to avoid things that trigger an attack. Or a person with diabetes may need a diet change, as well as learning how to monitor their blood sugar. Some diabetics may need to carry insulin with them too.
Overwhelming Feelings
Once you have been diagnosed with a chronic disease you might feel overwhelmed by just how much there is to learn about it. You might also feel overwhelmed by the lifestyle changes you need to make, such as diet changes, quitting smoking and exercising.
Stress is Everyone’s Enemy
Those overwhelming feelings can lead to excess stress, which makes coping harder. The following are ideas that help control your stress levels.
- Take a walk.
- Read books that interest you. Reading is a great way to relieve stress.
- Watch a movie to escape the daily stresses of life for a bit.
- Meditate, try yoga or tai chi.
- Visit with or call a friend. A few minutes of gossip and chatting helps you cut stress.
If your negative feelings do not start fading, it may help to see a professional. Most health insurance plans have coverage for counseling.
